ICE FISHING IN ONTARIOOnce again our lakes have frozen over, the boats are away and the augers are out and it's time for some great winter fishing. Ontario has some excellent ice fishing to offer to all of you diehard fishing people who just can't get enough. The object stays the same only the tackle, clothes, and your method of getting to your fishing hole changes. Below is a list of ice hut operators who would love to show you some great ice fishing in Ontario. For those of you who are not into hut operators, please remember safety first. Anyone who decides to go out onto a frozen body of water must make a personal decision to do so, realizing that there is a degree of risk associated with this choice. Ice seldom freezes at a uniform rate. What constitutes a safe depth of ice is difficult to apply in all cases. While three-inches of ice on a farm pond may pose little danger, that same three inches on a moving stream or lake with springs, stumps and currents could be very dangerous. Please never go onto the ice alone, and always let someone know where you're going, and when you should be back. ONTARIO ICE-HUT OPERATORS![]()

ALGONQUIN REGIONThe Algonquin Region extends from Georgian Bay on the west to the Ottawa River in the east. It includes the Haliburton Highlands, Muskoka Lakes, Ottawa Valley, Algonquin Provincial Park and the picturesque 30,000 islands in Georgian Bay. Accommodation, including tourist outfitter camps, are generally available throughout the Region, except in the wilds of Algonquin. Anglers should be aware that there are numerous cottages around many of the lakes in the Haliburton and Muskoka areas. Much of the Algonquin Region, though, is still covered with forest: pine and spruce mixed with southern hardwoods such as maple, yellow birch and beech. Wildlife includes big game such as moose, deer and bear, and small game such as grouse, ducks and varying hare (snowshoe rabbit). Algonquin Park is the heartland of such important fur-bearers as fisher and marten. |

Smallmouth bass and yellow perch also abound in Georgian Bay. Bass bite better during July and August. But come prepared, the waters of Georgian Bay can be extremely rough - seaworthy craft is essential. Walleye, pike, crappie and perch are the catch of the ice fishing season. |
