ICE FISHING IN ONTARIOOnce again our lakes have frozen over, the boats are away and the augers are out and it's time for some great winter fishing. Ontario has some excellent ice fishing to offer to all of you diehard fishing people who just can't get enough. The object stays the same only the tackle, clothes, and your method of getting to your fishing hole changes. Below is a list of ice hut operators who would love to show you some great ice fishing in Ontario. For those of you who are not into hut operators, please remember safety first. Anyone who decides to go out onto a frozen body of water must make a personal decision to do so, realizing that there is a degree of risk associated with this choice. Ice seldom freezes at a uniform rate. What constitutes a safe depth of ice is difficult to apply in all cases. While three-inches of ice on a farm pond may pose little danger, that same three inches on a moving stream or lake with springs, stumps and currents could be very dangerous. Please never go onto the ice alone, and always let someone know where you're going, and when you should be back. ONTARIO ICE-HUT OPERATORS![]()

CENTRAL REGIONWithin the Central Region, stretches the famous Trent Canal. This continuous waterway winds diagonally from Trenton on Lake Ontario to Port Severn on Georgian Bay. It features the Kawartha Lakes - some of the best warm water fishing in southern Ontario. The Kawartha Lakes are renowned for their yellow pickerel, maskinonge, smallmouth and largemouth bass. In addition, they support large populations of panfish such as rock bass, yellow perch, sunfish and bullheads. Generally, fishing in the Central Region tends to be rather crowded at certain times of the year especially in the spring. Most of the lakes and rivers are accessible by road. Facilities and services such as tourist resorts, motels, hotels, marinas and bait vendors are in ample supply throughout the region. |

LAKE SIMCOEIce Fishing for - Pike, walleye, perch Lake Simcoe, 60 miles north of Toronto, is a favorite with anglers throughout the year. In the winter, however, angling through the ice really gets into high gear. During this period, usually early January to late March, the lake is a regular beehive of fish huts, snowmobiles and fishermen. So great is the enthusiasm that many 'commercial fishing hut' operators maintain heated huts and furnish transportation, food, bait, tackle and other facilities to the angling public. Catches of fish vary during the winter but it seldom happens that any group is skunked - Lake trout, whitefish, panfish, pike, walleye, ling are the most common species taken.
