About the park: Belwood Lake CA is a day-use park best known as a great place for anglers of all ages and levels of experience. We have some of the best ice fishing in Ontario. A special fishing pond within the park offers youngsters 13 and under the chance to land a rainbow trout. More seasoned anglers will want to try the reservoir itself, or tackle the trout fishery downstream of Shand Dam, which is rated one of the best fly-fishing streams in North America. Belwood Lake offers much more than fishing. The lake is great for boating and water skiing. Swimmers can take a dip in a spring-fed quarry or enjoy the beach. Picnicking and hiking are also popular pastimes. Belwood Lake was created with the construction of Shand Dam in 1942. The dam was the first of its kind built in Canada for both water conservation and flood protection purposes. Park visitors can stand on the top deck of the dam and see the vista of the Grand River valley below. A stairway along the face of the dam allows visitors to walk down to its base.
