The Lake The Ark lake, Crater Lake, is a unique deep cold quarry lake over 70 feet deep, 14 acres in size. This self contained lake originated through a sand and gravel operation which ended in 1981. The aquifer was exposed and eventually filled the large quarry pit. Various depths occur due to the operations varying excavations. Daniel's Ark along with other non profit groups organized by Daniel Elliott have rehabilitated the quarry by means of weed beds fallen tree habitat shore line improvements, minnows and crayfish installation etc… The Ark lake has natural reproduction of perch, suckers, emerald and golden shiners and fat head minnows. A Guelph University study has made a map diagram of the quarry lake to give you fishing enthusiasts a better handle of the lake

The Fish The lake is stocked with predominantly Trout, and Pickeral. Other varieties of fish can be caught including Perch. Trout Native fish species are released annually such as speckled, rainbow and brown trout at 6-8 inch fingerling size. The fish are not pellet raised and are free ranging on natural minnows and aquatic forage. Fish range in size from fingerling to trophy, 5-12 lbs. Winter season expect speckled trout ranging from fingerling to 2lbs. Our speckled trout fingerling release program only began in spring 2001. Due to past release programs dating back to 1995 you can expect to catch Brook Trout 5-8lbs within the next 2 years. Rainbow trout at 5-12 lbs are currently being caught. An average brown trout fingerling released at 6-8 inches has grown in 5 years to 6-8 lbs. The odd 10 pounder has been caught.

Perch Perch vary anywhere from 4-12 inches. Average is 4-8 inches. Jumbos are generally caught late ice.

What's going on with the pickerel or walleye? Due to the fact the Ark lake is very clean, cold and clear expect this species to be inhabiting deep water areas of 60-70 feet. They are usually suspended 20-30 feet off the bottom. Their main forage is perch and minnows. The Ark lake has exceptional oxygen levels even in extreme depths. Therefore you can find their favorite food of perch at all depths, shallow and deep. The pickerel or Walleye were released at 3-4 inches in the fall of 1998 and are approximately 17-21 inches. Success has rarely been in day time hours. Success at night between 11:00p.m.-6:00a.m. has been the active period. You can expect trophies in the next 2 years. Bring your graph you will definitely mark them day and night. No one bait or artificial presentation has been established as of yet.

Please contact us if you require further information such as boat availability and membership to our Crater Lake Lodge cabin. Bait in the form of minnows is available at our site year round.

Ontario Ice Fishing Adventures

Ice fish some of our other area lakes.

Fishing through the ice requires skill and knowledge as does open water angling, but anyone can ice fish successfully if he/she does the homework. Learning about the water to be fished, the equipment and its capabilities, proper clothing and safety precautions are all part of a successful, enjoyable winter fishing experience. Perhaps the best way to get started is to accompany a friend or neighbor on a half-day ice fishing outing. If you are unable to locate anyone to go with, the next best alternative is to visit a tackle shop in a popular ice fishing area. The proprietors are interested in seeing that you have a successful and enjoyable trip and will provide you with all of the necessary equipment. You may also watch for announcements of local ice fishing contests or tournaments run by local sportsmen's clubs -- ice fishermen tend to be a highly social group, eager to share tips, techniques and stories.
