Ontario Ice Fishing Derbies & Tournaments in CanadaFishing through the ice requires skill and knowledge as does open water angling, but anyone can ice fish successfully if he/she does the homework. Learning about the water to be fished, the equipment and its capabilities, proper clothing and safety precautions are all part of a successful, enjoyable winter fishing experience. Perhaps the best way to get started is to accompany a friend or neighbor on a half-day ice fishing outing. If you are unable to locate anyone to go with, the next best alternative is to visit a tackle shop in a popular ice fishing area. The proprietors are interested in seeing that you have a successful and enjoyable trip and will provide you with all of the necessary equipment. You may also watch for announcements of local ice fishing contests or tournaments run by local sportsmen's clubs -- ice fishermen tend to be a highly social group, eager to share tips, techniques and stories.
Ice fishing, as a winter getaway, can offer solitude or an opportunity to bond with family and friends. ![]() Back to Ice Hut Operators in Ontario Every person needs a license to fish in Ontario and money from fishing licenses is used to maintain and enhance this wonderful resource. Fishing Safety Comes FirstIce Fishing Safety Tips Ice fishing anglers and trappers are urged to be aware of ice conditions before venturing out on frozen waters Before going out onto a frozen lake, pond or river, its important to take ice fishing safety precautions to reduce the risk of falling through the ice. Knowing how to judge ice conditions will also help in making a more informed decision. Be aware of any snow-covered ice. The presence of snow can insulate ice, inhibiting solid ice formation, and makes it difficult to check ice thickness. Snow also hides cracked, weak and open water areas. Stay away from cracks, pressure ridges, slushy or darker areas that signify thinner ice, and ice that forms around partially submerged objects, such as trees, brush, embankments or structures. Ice thickness is not consistent it can vary significantly within a few inches. Ice shouldn't be judged strictly by appearance. It is always a good idea for anglers to drill test holes as they venture out onto a lake. Daily changes in temperature and wind can cause ice to expand and contract which affects its strength. It is always good to talk to people at local bait shops, or other anglers, if you are not familiar with a lake. The following minimums for travel on clear - blue lake ice formed under ideal conditions. However, early in the winter advises doubling these figures to be safe 4 inches - group of people walking single file, 5.5-6 inches - snowmobile or ATV, 8-12 inches - automobile, 12-15 inches - Pickup truck. FISHinONTARIO suggests wearing a personal flotation device and carrying a cell phone while ice fishing. An ice chisel should be used to check ice thickness while moving around, and ice picks or a set of screwdrivers should be carried to pull yourself back on the ice in case you fall through. If someone falls through the ice, act quickly by calling 911. Attempt to reach the victim with a long pole, board, rope, blanket or snowmobile suit. If that isn't possible, throw the victim a life jacket, empty water jug or other buoyant object. Go to the victim as the last resort. Should this be necessary, a human chain, in which rescuers lie on the ice with each person grasping the feet of the person in front, is an effective technique. Treat a hypothermia victim by removing wet clothing and replacing it with dry clothing. An effective treatment is to place the victim in a sleeping bag, if available, with another person. Immediately transport the victim to a hospital. Other Ice Fishing Lakes in OntarioANGUS LAKE. BARK LAKE. BAY of QUINTE. LAKE OF BAYS BELWOOD LAKE. BOSHKUNG LAKE. BRIGHTON BAY. CALIPER LAKE.
