Ice Fishing in Ontario on Lake Scugog with Paul's Ice Huts

Fishing Lake Scugog: Lake Scugog was once described as a "Honey Pot" and "the pick of them all" where a fisherman could fill a boat in no time at all. During the winter you will find a community built of like-minded people, trying to catch the mighty Pickerel. Spring is jumbo Perch season. The summer is the season to catch the very aggressive Small and Largemouth Bass, and autumn is the time to troll for the powerful Muskie - be forewarned the Muskie can pack a punch if you hook a large one.

Ice Fishing On Scugog: Every winter, hundreds of ice fishing huts dot Lake Scugog in pursuit of the Pickerel. On the very warm winter days, hundreds of anglers also ice fish in the open to try to catch Perch and Walleye (Pickerel), along the edges of the weed beds and down in deep pockets of water are considered the best areas for ice fishing. Placing an ice hut on the lake you must watch the weather closely or you could go out to find a large hole where your hut once stood. Also, you should anchor your hut to the ice because the wind can pick up tremendous speed going across the lake which will relocate your hut many miles away.

Of all of the winter sports available to the outdoor enthusiast, none can combine the beauty of a morning sunrise, the camraderie of good friends and the thrill of tangling with a fiesty trout, pickerel, pike - you get the idea! the cold weather is but a minor set back when the fish are biting. When the bite dies off, a shoreline fire raises the spirits and can be used to heat a can of revitalizing soup. The necessary tackle can be kept to a minimum while not reducing the chances of success. Simplicity is the name of the game when temperature necessitates layers of bulky clothing. A hut can also be used and is by far one of the greatest inventions ever concieved by an angler.

Lake Simcoe, Lake Scugog, The Bay of Quinte, Lake Nipissing, Lake Temagami and Elliot lake are some of the more popular lakes amongst ice fisherman, but hundreds of small shield lakes also contain hungry fish. Stocking lists can be obtained from the Ministry of Natural Resources regarding stocked lakes as well as those sporting natural populations of fish.

Lake Scugog is minutes from Toronto, it is a man-made lake, the lake is shallow and the waters are murky and very weedy. The dark waters are a perfect home for the elusive walleye.

The Lake Scugog ice fishing season is nearly upon us. Winter like weather sparks ice fishing season and weather permitting, ice fishermen will soon be heading out on our hard surfaced lake ice. First ice is always your best bet at catching your quarry whether it's northern pike, walleye or perch.

Already lake ice has begun to form on most northern lakes. Lake ice development usually occurs by the second week of December and from all indications, it appears the ice fishing season on our Ontario lakes is right on schedule. It's the perfect time of the year to enjoy the winter sport of ice fishing .

Interesting Facts:

  • Lake Scugog is the most south western of the Kawartha Lakes. It is also the only artificially made lake, the others were formed by glacial activity.
  • Yellow Pickerel were introduced into lake in 1948 from Bay of Quinte.
  • No one has a written record - it is said that a man who struck what he thought was a log with his spear turned out to be a 57 pound Muskie.
  • Lake Scugog has competitive Pro Bass Tournaments each summer.
  • Lake Scugog wasn't heavily fished until 1970, when the Walleye population took over.
  • Lake Scugog had a record number of ice fishing huts in 1992 with over 800.
  • In 1857 and again in 1904 low water levels and severe weather caused the water to freeze almost to the bottom of the lake.
  • Thousands of fish were asphyxiated because there were no air holes.
  • You could cut holes in the ice and fill bags full of mudcats and Muskies - they would come in by the hundreds.
  • In the spring the shore line was full of decaying fish.

Ice fish some of our other area lakes.

Fishing through the ice requires skill and knowledge as does open water angling, but anyone can ice fish successfully if he/she does the homework. Learning about the water to be fished, the equipment and its capabilities, proper clothing and safety precautions are all part of a successful, enjoyable winter fishing experience. Perhaps the best way to get started is to accompany a friend or neighbor on a half-day ice fishing outing. If you are unable to locate anyone to go with, the next best alternative is to visit a tackle shop in a popular ice fishing area. The proprietors are interested in seeing that you have a successful and enjoyable trip and will provide you with all of the necessary equipment. You may also watch for announcements of local ice fishing contests or tournaments run by local sportsmen's clubs -- ice fishermen tend to be a highly social group, eager to share tips, techniques and stories.
