Walleye (Pickerel) Fishing
The walleye is Ontario's number one game fish. Besides being a lot of fun to catch, they taste great! Our walleye average from 16 to 22 inches in length but there are always several around 32 inches caught each season. These fish are accustomed to strong currents and offer a battle that will excite any fisherman. In the lakes, you'll find them just about everywhere. There is no need to travel to the other end of the lake for prime fishing. Some of our best evening fishing is within a 5 minute boat ride, and daytime hotspots are too numerous to mention.
A 3/8 ounce lead head jig with a rubber twister tail is your best bait for these fish. A slow presentation along the bottom in 8 to 18 feet of water produces the majority of them. For those that like to troll, a perch colored Hot'n Tot is a favorite of many fishermen and has produced many trophy walleye. Check out our lake maps in this section for more details on the lake's best fishing spots.
Fishermen wishing to experience one of Ontario's largest species and one of the most aggressive fighters come looking for the Great Northern Pike. This fighting machine is a very abundant species in our waters and known to grow in excess of 50 inches in length. These fish are very exciting to catch because of the ferocity with which they strike a bait. Once the hook is set, they will often make several long runs before you are able to get them to the boat.
Northern Pike are found in all depths of our lakes and around a variety of structure. Very often these fish are caught while jigging for walleye but if actively searching for them, shallower water is recommended. On Makokibatan Lake, almost the entire north shore is great pike water. For Miminiska Lake, Ferguson Bay is a summer and fall favorite. Early in the season, Northern can be caught just off their spawning grounds in 1 or 2 feet of water. Most often though, northern are active in 8 to 10 feet of water, in the vicinity of weed growth. Spoons such as Daredevils and Johnson Silver Minnows are the most productive baits and the weedless variety are ideal. Large body baits made by Suick or Rapala are very effective if moved along the perimeter of weed beds, just under the surface. Get ready for some explosive action.
Brook Trout Fishing
Brook trout are one of the world's most beautiful species of fish. They require very clean, cold, fast moving water and must spawn on dirt free gravel under moving water. There are few places anywhere in which these requirements are met and fishing pressure has reduced most populations to a precious few. The Albany River is an exception. It is world famous for its brook trout habitat and has a food supply that produces fish up to 24 inches in length. These trout average 15 -17 inches in these waters providing a grand reward to serious anglers. Pound for pound, the brook trout is one of the finest fighting fish, and battling one in the strong currents of the Albany River is a true test of one's angling abilities.
Some trout will hit a lead head jig with a rubber twister tail, but the most productive lure is a small spoon. Little Cleo is a very effective spoon in a variety of colors. Landing a trout with a fly rod is a great experience; the muddler minnow is a favourite of fly-fishermen. To ensure we maintain a strong population of this wonderful species, all brook trout fishing is conducted exclusively on a catch and release basis. The use of barbless hooks is mandatory.
The Albany River watershed, including Miminiska Lake, is one of the greatest remote fishing areas in Canada. Spectacular Walleye and Northern Pike fishing abounds in the 15,000 acres of varied and exciting waters, while world-class Brook Trout fishing can be found in the numerous fast-moving rivers. Our experienced native guides know the waters like the back of their hand, and where the monster Pike and trophy sized Walleye can be found. Guides are an option on Miminiska Lake, but are a requirement if travelling on any of the fast water rivers or outlying lakes.
Makokibatan Lake is over 18 miles long, and famous for its large and plentiful walleye. Our 16 foot boats with 25 hp motors will get you to your favorite spots quickly. The cold water and steady currents of the mighty Albany River also provide for some monster Northern Pike. If you're in search of even more adventure, let one of our experienced guides take you downstream through rapids in search of the legendary Albany River brook trout.
For most of our fishermen, finding fish in our lakes and rivers is an easy task, and many guests like the adventure of finding their own special hot spots. Many of our first time guests though do enjoy the company and experience of our local guides, while getting to know their way around the lakes and some of the many prime fishing areas.
Our guides are very experienced and know exactly how and where to catch fish. Whether you would like one of our guides to show the hot spots on the lake or would like to experience a river trip through the rapids of the world famous Albany River, their professionalism, and knowledge of the area will impress you. Many of our guides are native Ojibway and have lived their entire lives on the Albany River, so their wealth of knowledge of the area is second to none. Their stories are worth the trip alone. Guides are mandatory for those venturing through the Albany River rapids. These trips offer exceptional walleye and trout action in a very different fishing environment.
Preserving Our Fishery
We know that our guests share our desire to maintain a healthy fishery in our northern Ontario waters. In order to maintain a balance between our fishery, and business preservation, we have incorporated a variety of measures to ensure our guests have great fishing now as well as in the future.
Because of our concern about the total number of fish harvested from our water body, we encourage our guests to take only those fish to be eaten while on the lake. Shore lunch is prepared daily by our lodge staff on the shore of the lake for everyone to enjoy. We cook fresh walleye over an open fire; the best walleye you will ever taste.
For those that insist on taking fish home, we permit guests to take up to the Ontario Conservation Fishing Licence limits. These limits can be found in the Licences & Regulations section. Brook Trout fishing on our waters is very exciting. In order to preserve the limited population of this fragile and beautiful species, all brook trout fishing is conducted on a catch and release basis. We insist on the use of barbless hooks to ensure quick release and prevent injury to the trout.
Having the proper tackle and equipment while fishing for Walleye, Pike and Trout is half the battle. At both of our Lodges, we offer a fully stocked tackle shop. Here you'll find a variety of the most productive baits that are used on our water systems. Our full assortment of bait sizes, shapes and colors come with recommendations from our guide staff. For those that want to shop around and have their tackle ready to go for when they arrive, here is a list of some of our suggested lures and equipment...
Licences & Regulations
In support of current conservation practices, it is Liddle's Fishing Adventures policy that guests wishing to take fish home, abide by the Ontario Conservation Licence limits.
With this in mind, guests may wish to purchase the less expensive "conservation" licence and not a "standard" licence.
Ontario Fishing Licences are also sold throughout the province in local bait and tackle shops as well as some restaurants and hotels. It is your responsibility to purchase a licence prior to flying into Makokibatan Lodge or Makok Outpost. Licences may be purchased at the sea plane base of Nakina Air, your departure point in Nakina.
