ICE FISHING IN ONTARIOOnce again our lakes have frozen over, the boats are away and the augers are out and it's time for some great winter fishing. Ontario has some excellent ice fishing to offer to all of you diehard fishing people who just can't get enough. The object stays the same only the tackle, clothes, and your method of getting to your fishing hole changes. Below is a list of ice hut operators who would love to show you some great ice fishing in Ontario. For those of you who are not into hut operators, please remember safety first. Anyone who decides to go out onto a frozen body of water must make a personal decision to do so, realizing that there is a degree of risk associated with this choice. Ice seldom freezes at a uniform rate. What constitutes a safe depth of ice is difficult to apply in all cases. While three-inches of ice on a farm pond may pose little danger, that same three inches on a moving stream or lake with springs, stumps and currents could be very dangerous. Please never go onto the ice alone, and always let someone know where you're going, and when you should be back. ONTARIO ICE-HUT OPERATORS![]()

NORTHEASTERN REGIONThe Northeastern Region extends from Lake Superior in the west (eastern shore of the lake between Sault Ste. Marie and Wawa) to the Ottawa River in the east (from Mattawa in the south to the north end of Lake Timiskaming). It includes such famous fishing waters as Lake Temagami, Lake Nipissing, Lake Panache, Ranger Lake and the Mississagi and French Rivers. Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron, sometimes known as rainbow country, is also part of the Northeastern Region. In Ontario, the Northeastern Region is where the north begins. Wildlife in the Northeastern Region includes big game such as moose and bear - a few white-tailed deer inhabit the southern part of the Region including Manitoulin Island. Upland game such as ruffed grouse, spruce grouse and woodcock are fairly common. Lake Nipissing and the numerous beaver ponds throughout the Region support many broods of wild ducks. Furbearers such as beaver, fisher, marten, Canada lynx, otter, muskrat and mink are fairly abundant. |
