Stewardship Association Information ![]() Fishing in Temagami OntarioTemagami Stewardship Association Feb. 28th meeting of the Temagami Stewardship Report on February 28th Meeting of Temagami Stewardship Council There were significant positive accomplishments discussed and initiatives set in motion at the Monday February 28th 2005 meeting of the Temagami Stewardship Council. In the Action Items Chairman Gaye Smith reported that the winners of the Trophy Live Release Contest have been contacted, Advanced Taxidermy has the pictures and the replica mounts are being created. The maps used by the Stewardship will be changed slightly to reflect maps used by the Ministry of Natural Resources on all maps and posters. The Stewardship will actively pursue the OFAH to facilitate the inclusion of Lake Temagami in the Rock Bass Invading Species Study to be conducted in the Spring. Director, Brent Trach of the Ministry of the Environment, will help in contacting a speaker for the Water Quality Dinner on May 30. The narrative report on the Lake Trout Genetics Study was sent to FedNor on February 14. All Directors were reminded to actively search for persons who might volunteer to record walleye spawning area observations. In Correspondence the EBR announcement sent to members by Peter Sword on the whitefish tool kit was discussed. Chuck McCrudden Area Biologist, MNR reported on a letter he sent on behalf of the region to retain the present regulation of 25 fish limit. Gaye reported on a call from the Chairperson of the Nipissing Stewardship Council regarding the announcement of a Stewardship Coordinator to be shared between the two Councils. The report to the Ontario Trillium Foundation on the funding of the Spawning Area Project in 2003 was delivered on February 23. Information from the EBR posting on proposed fishing boundary changes was disseminated. Further information on the proposed changes can be found on the Stewardship web page. The directors will investigate the materials and formulate a Stewardship position at the next meeting. In a report from Bobby Morrison who has been handing out materials to ice fishermen on behalf of the Stewardship it was mentioned that there has been great cooperation from the commercial ice hut operations of Jerry Burrows, Tamar, Beccas Haven and Temagami Shores. Response has been positive at private shacks as well. The discussion on the Ontario Stewardship Coordinator position centered in on how to approach the March 10th meeting in North Bay with the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Nipissing Stewardship Council. The Chairman and several Directors will be attending the meeting to iron out a framework for the implementation of the Coordinator position as announced by the Minister on January 28th. There are some misconceptions as to what a Stewardship Coordinator is. However, there is a definite job description in the Ontario Stewardship Council. Stewardship Coordinators are paid by MNR with the understanding that they work for the community through the Stewardship Council. Their task involves building the necessary relationships and partnerships, working collaboratively with agencies and associations, providing a window to the science and information within MNR and the extensive network that they are a part of. They take an active role as the spokesperson for the Council. They have a local network of personal contacts in the community, and have a responsibility to be an active participant in the greater network of 40 Councils, which is Ontario Stewardship - a key to the success of this program. They are also part of a regional/provincial/national network, which will: Create a broader sense of purpose (e.g. ecosystem and corporate approach); Lend some consistency to the program; Maintain currency with programs and developments; Obtain and give advice on how to (e.g. relationship development; skills & techniques); Create synergy and momentum. The group will report back to the Temagami Stewardship Council with their findings at the next meeting. In the discussion on Temagami Stewardship Council Projects for 2005 it was noted that many of the Stewardships projects are on-going. The Walleye Spawning Observation, the Anglers Journal, the Web Page, the Trophy Fish Live Release Contest, the Water Quality Sampling, the Spawning Area Project, the Fall Lake Trout Spawning Observation, the Measuring Tape Decals and Public Education are all projects that carry on from year to year. In 2005 the Stewardship will endeavour to; have the OFAH Invading Species Project come to Lake Temagami to look at the effect of rock bass on the fishery, conduct a walleye specific creel on Lake Temagami, remove the sucker minnow from the live bait ban and be involved in assisting the Tarra and municipal programs aimed at lake cleanup and enhancement. The Stewardship would like to extend an invitation to anyone interested in joining our network of volunteer walleye spawning observers for this spring. We have lost our most dependable observer Eugene Deiner. If you are available to observe for a few evenings near the end of April contact the Stewardship. Anglers are encouraged to get involved in the Anglers Journal for 2005. The goal is to have 1000 fishing trip entries in 2005. In the past many have stated that they didnt trust data gathered by the MNR in creels. The data from the Anglers Journal goes to the Stewardship and only after the information is tabulated into charts and graphs does it go to the MNR to be used as one of many tools in formulating Status of the Fishery Reports. In other business, John Moskwa, the Director representing the Temagami Chamber of Commerce, announced that he was still waiting for an answer from the Minister to his letter asking for the walleye slot size to be removed from the Lake Temagami fishing regulations. He went on to say that if the response is not favourable the Chamber will be withdrawing from the Stewardship. The Stewardship has been assured by the Ministers Office that the regulations will not be changed for at least 2 years. The next meeting of the Temagami Stewardship Council will be held on Tuesday March 29, 2005 at the Temagami Municipal Building. Please note the change from the last Monday of the month as that Monday is Easter Monday. The public is always welcome.
