Stewardship Association Information ![]() Fishing in Temagami OntarioTemagami Stewardship Association January 19, 2004 meeting of the Temagami Stewardship Council Temagami Stewardship Council Meeting of January 19, 2004 The meeting of the Temagami Stewardship Council on January 19, 2004 consisted of the following highlights; the installation of Lance White as the director representing TAFIP (Temagami Fish Hatchery), a preliminary presentation on the results of the 2003 winter and summer creels by Chuck McCrudden, Area Biologist for the Ministry of Natural Resources, and a presentation by Brent Trach, of the Ministry of the Environment, on the disposal of waste from the ice fishing bungalows. A motion was passed unanimously to install Lance White to the Board of Directors of the Temagami Stewardship Council as the director representing the Temagami Fish Hatchery. The Temagami Stewardship Council has always appreciated the hard work done by the members of the Temagami Fish Hatchery. Having a Hatchery representative back on board is a welcome addition. In the action items, the application to the Trillium Foundation for funds to support a study on lake trout and pickerel spawning shoals was discussed. Interaction with the Trillium Foundation have been very positive this year. In the correspondence, reference was made to these three issues; reports sent to funders of the Summer Creel and the Lake Trout Study, a submission to David Ramsay asking for his support of the Temagami Stewardship Council becoming a member of the Ontario Stewardship Program and the acceptance of the Stewardship as an associate member of the Ontario Environmental Network. Secretary Treasurer, Wayne Adair, presented an up to date financial report. Requirements necessary to complete funding arrangements with FedNor, The Living Legacy Trust and the Trillium Foundation were discussed. In his presentation, Area Biologist, Chuck McCrudden of the MNR presented preliminary information extrapolated from the winter and summer creels conducted on Lake Temagami in 2003. The results from the summer creel show there were some 784 interviews conducted. There were 185 lake trout, 8 whitefish, 3 northern pike, 3 smallmouth, and 22 walleye sampled. Angling pressure seems to be down for the lake trout and up for walleye and bass. The harvest numbers are down for lake trout and up for walleye and bass. As far as the origin of the anglers 90% are from Ontario and about 50% of them are paying guests. From the winter creel, there were 514 interviews conducted. There were 136 lake trout, 69 whitefish, and 10 walleye sampled. The angling pressure was up for lake trout, walleye and whitefish. The harvest was down for lake trout and whitefish but up nearly 4 times for walleye. The majority, of the fishermen 68% in the winter were paying guests. The final report on the creel information should be ready for release in March of 2004. I will try to post the charts and graphs of the draft report on the Stewardship web page www.temagamistewardship.ca In his presentation on the disposal of waste from the ice hut bungalows, Brent Trach of the Ministry of the Environment, sited the disposal of waste from ice bungalows as an issue that is a growing concern as the number of ice fishing bungalows increases on lakes across Ontario. Brent stated that there are 3 options which would provide an environmentally correct resolution to the disposal of the waste. The waste material could be taken to; 1.) a municipal treatment facility, 2.) an approved landfill site or 3.) an approved trench. The first option would be the preferred option, however, the distance from the Lake to the Temagami town site is prohibitive and the availability of the site on Bear Island is at this time not an option. The Stewardship will be sending a letter to the Municipality of Temagami asking them to make a request to the MOEs approval branch to add sewage to the waste streams allowed at the Briggs landfill The Temagami Stewardship councils web page is undergoing a face lift. The page will be back shortly with a new look and a new address www.temagamistewardship.ca will be the place to find information on the Stewardship activities and projects, as well as the Anglers Journal and fisheries related news and issues. Upcoming Projects for 2004 were discussed. Collecting fish heads to determine the age of fish using the otholith bone and the observation of pickerel spawning shoals in the spring are possible research projects. The group also discussed the 2004 Sudbury Restoration Workshop to be held at Laurentian University in February. The workshops are very pertinent to the fisheries in the Boreal Shield area of Ontario of which Temagami is a part. The next meeting of the Temagami Stewardship Council is Monday February 23, 2004 in the Temagami Municipal Building. The public is always welcome to attend.
