Stewardship Association Information ![]() Fishing in Temagami OntarioTemagami Stewardship Association May 30th meeting of the Temagami Stewardship Council Temagami Stewardship Council Meeting The meeting of the Temagami Stewardship Council was held on Monday, May 30th, at the Temagami Shores. Following the meeting, the volunteers and directors all enjoyed a delicious dinner plus an informative workshop about Water Quality presented by Mr. Clark. The first order of business to begin the meeting was the installation of Marge Fryer as a new Director to the Temagami Stewardship Council. Marge is the voting representative for the Temagami Lakes Association. This was an action made necessary by the change created in the bylaws at the April meeting which was to create the position of a Chairman without representation. In the action items, Chairman Gaye Smith reported on a very positive meeting with the MNR in North Bay on May 10th. This was an opportunity to discuss concerns that the input from local volunteer organizations was not being considered in management decisions. Involving and valuing the input of the organizations was demonstrated with an invitation extended to the Temagami and Nipissing Stewardships to attend the May 10th meeting in North Bay on the Ecological Framework for Recreational Fisheries in Ontario. Dave Maraldo, of Fisheries Branch, made a presentation on the new Framework that will include: a) new Fisheries Management Zones, b) Regulation review, c) Resource monitoring and reporting, and d) Stewardships by fish management zones to guide objective setting, regulations and monitoring. A key to the new system seems to be the effort to involve public input (Stewardship) at all levels of the process. Although Lake Temagami will be in Zone 11, the framework allows for A few key lakes to be managed by lake specific regulations. Posters advertising the Stewardships Trophy Live Release Contest and Anglers Journal Contest have been distributed to all businesses in the Temagami area. Chuck McCrudden reported that the planning for the Walleye Specific Creel is complete. Equipment such as night vision goggles, a tent, and headlamps has been purchased. There has been a problem with hiring the creel crew, which hopefully will be rectified in the near future. The TLA has offered to assist with accommodation for this crew and the municipality has agreed to look after the administration. A sincere thank-you is extended to our partners for assisting in facilitating this project. Reports from volunteers who had made the effort to observe the walleye spawning activity this spring suggest that this may have been another poor spawning year. Only a few fish were seen. A report that several walleye had been caught since the season opened with eggs still in them was discussed. Alex Paul reported that an 11 and a 15 lb. walleye had been released. In the feedback from the Winter Ice Fishing Season, it was acknowledged that the ice conditions had made it very easy for anglers to access most of the lake in their vehicles this past winter. In response to a letter voicing a concern about the waste from ice huts, John Moskwa and John Harding reported that the waste from their huts is taken off the lake to approved areas for disposal. As for a reported increase in hut numbers this winter, the final counts conducted by the MNR and Stewardship volunteers will be posted as soon as they are available. In a group discussion activity designed to generate new ideas regarding the promotion of the Stewardship concept, it was unanimous that the top priority is seen to be education of the general public as to the value and possibilities of the Stewardship. Ways to foster public involvement and increase public education were discussed. The topic will continue to be discussed further at future meetings. The Annual General Meeting of the Temagami Stewardship Council will be held on Monday, July 25th at the Temagami Municipal Building Auditorium. The meeting will feature a presentation on Invading Species by the biologists from the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. A presentation on the new Ecological Framework for Recreational Fisheries in Ontario will be presented by Dave Maraldo of the MNR Fish and Wildlife Branch. The data-recording webpage for the TSC Anglers Journal had a technical problem, which has been corrected. Anglers are reminded that there are special prizes consisting of a Walker electric downrigger and a Lowrance Fish Finder to be won for entering fishing trip information online. Check out the TSC webpage at www.temagamistewardship.ca The next meeting of the TSC is scheduled for Monday, June 27th at the Temagami Municipal Building beginning at 1:00 pm. The public is always welcome to attend.
